Removal and Fitting Sheets

MGF rear screen removal fact sheet:With the roof in the up position and window closed. Release the back bar by kneeling into the back of the car and pulling back the carpet. Release the 5 spring loaded clips this releases the back bar. You are now able to lift up the back bar which is hinged in both corners. (Note: at this stage it is advisable that you cover the rear deck with a dust sheet in order to protect the paint work and to catch the drilling.) A row of rivets is now revealed along the back bar, these need to be drilled out using an 1/8th drill bit. There are 15 rivets that need to be drilled. Once the rivets have been drilled out and the metal strip removed, you can unzip the rear screen and the rear screen section is out (you may find a metal clasp at the end of the zip which has to be removed)

MGF Refitting Instructions:Lay your now reconditioned rear screen in place along the back bar taking care to line up as removed. It is a good idea to rivet the middle hole first and double check that the screen is in the correct position. Replace all the rivets that had been removed. You can now do up the zip. Push the rear bar downwards back into its original position and reclamp. Place the carpet back. You may need to clean the screen inside and out using a household spray window cleaner and a soft cloth.

MX5 Rear Screen Removal Fact Sheet

With roof in up position and window closed. Remove plastic carpet clips around rear deck. Pull carpet back to reveal 3 section metal rails. Remove 10mm nuts (3 in each side rail and 7 in centre rail). Remove rails. You will see the rain guttering (plastic and rubber) round the rear deck. Drill the heads off all rivets. These rivets hold the rear section of hood to the main body of the hood. There are two more rivets at each corner of the rain guttering which are not possible to drill into position. Slide the rear section of hood off all the captive bolts and firmly pull up both corner sections of the roof, this will enable you to drill the two remaining rivets at each side. There are two remaining flat brass rivets holding the two parts of the hood together, again drill these out. Remove the metal clips at either end of the zip and unzip the rear panel making sure you don't lose the slider. You are now able to take the rear screen section out.

MX5 Refitting InstructionsLay the screen panel roughly in place. Reattach the zip slider making sure the two halves of the zip are in line and then close the zip. Reattach the two small metal clips to each end of the zip. Refit the plastic rain guttering to the captive bolts (back half of guttering only.) It is only necessary to re-rivet the two brass rivets you took out as in section six of the removal instructions. No other re-riveting is necessary. Relocate the rear section of the hood to the captive bolts. Making sure you tuck the rear section of hood between the two halves of the plastic rain channel. Refit one of the side metal rails first, then the middle section followed by the remaining side rail and replace the 10mm nuts. Fold back the carpet to its original position and refit the plastic clips. Clean the Perspex screen with spray window cleaner, using a soft cloth.
